答曰：「斷諸思覺故，心不散故。數隨息時，心不定、心多劇故；止則心閑少事故，心住一處故。」
He answers: "Because it severs all discursive thoughts and prevents the mind from being scattered. When counting and following the breath, the mind is unsettled and has much agitation; stopping allows the mind to be at leisure with few tasks, resting in a single place."
