When first entering the taintless path of seeing the truths, these virtues are named the eightfold noble path. When entering the path of reflection, they are named the seven factors of awakening. When first entering the path, contemplating mindfulness of the body, feelings, mind, and dharmas, constantly single-minded in mindfulness—these are named the four applications of mindfulness. In this way attaining the taste of good dharmas through four kinds of diligent effort, these are named the four right efforts. In this way, as the initial gate of desire, vīrya, concentration, and wisdom, diligently making effort to seek mastery at will, these are named the four bases of psychic power. Although they are named the four applications of mindfulness, the four right efforts, the four bases of psychic power, the five faculties, and so forth, they all encompass what is practiced according to early or late, lesser or greater stages and conditions, each receiving its name. It is like the four great elements: each contains the four great elements, but receives its name merely from what is predominant. Where the earth element is predominant and water, fire, and wind are minor, it is named the earth element; water, fire, and wind are also like this! In this way, among the thirty-seven factors [of awakening], each contains all the factors, just as within the four applications of mindfulness there are the four right efforts, the four bases of psychic power, the five faculties, the five powers, the seven factors of awakening, the eightfold path, and so forth.
