When a bodhisattva sees the path, they should practice three kinds of forbearance: forbearance toward sentient beings, compliant forbearance toward dharmas, and the forbearance of the non-arising of dharmas. What is forbearance toward sentient beings? When all sentient beings curse, strike, or kill, doing various evil deeds, one's mind remains unmoved and unswayed, without anger or resentment; not only does one endure it, but one becomes even more compassionate, aspiring that all these sentient beings seek good things and attain them all, without abandoning them in one's mind. At that time, one gradually comes to understand the true mark of all dharmas, as if perfumed by scent. For example, a loving mother cherishes her infant child, nursing and raising it; she does not consider its various impurities as bad, but pities and cares for it doubly, wishing to bring it joy. The practitioner is like this: though all sentient beings perform various evil, pure, and impure actions, their mind does not increase in malice, nor does it regress or turn away. Furthermore, [the practitioner thinks]: 'I alone must cross over all the immeasurable sentient beings of the ten directions so that they attain the Buddha path.' With an enduring mind they do not regress, regret, withdraw, slacken, tire, fear, or falter; this is single-mindedly focusing attention within forbearance toward sentient beings. With three kinds of contemplation they do not let thoughts turn outward; they restrain external thoughts of various conditions and bring them back. This is called forbearance toward sentient beings.
