It is like the king of Vārāṇasī who, in the heat of summer, was on an upper story sitting on a couch of the seven precious things. He had a serving-maid grind ox-head sandalwood fragrance and rub it on his body. The maid wore many bangles on her arms, and as she rubbed the king's body, the sound of the bangles filled his ears, which greatly vexed the king. He instructed her to take them off one by one; with fewer bangles the sound grew faint, and when only a single bangle remained, it was quiet and without sound. The king was then awakened and said: 'State, ministers, subjects, palace folk, and court ladies—having many affairs and many vexations is just like this!' He immediately renounced desire, dwelt alone in contemplation, and attained pratyekabuddhahood. His hair and beard fell away naturally, natural robes clad his body, and departing from the pavilion, he used the power of his supernatural locomotion to go forth from the household life into the mountains. Conditions such as this are of the middling kind of pratyekabuddha.
