1.21

"‘If one repays hatred with hatred,
hatred returns and clings to oneself;
when hatred is not repaid,
one can break a great army.
Being able not to hate
is the dharma of great people;
the hatred of petty people
is hard to move, like a mountain.
Hatred is a heavy poison,
causing much ruin and harm;
unable to harm that other,
it is extinguished only when harming oneself.
Hatred is a great blindness:
possessing eyes, one perceives nothing;
hatred is dust and defilement,
polluting the pure mind.
Hatred such as this
must be eradicated with urgency;
a venomous snake in the room,
if not removed, harms people.’
Various kinds of poison of hatred like this are immeasurable; one should practice maitrī and eliminate hatred. This is the maitrī samādhi door."
