2.13

Or there is a practitioner who first proceeds from the initial plane up to the higher planes, and further on the higher planes practices loving-kindness: first attaining bliss himself, he shatters the poison of anger, and next extends it to boundless sentient beings in the ten directions. At that time, he attains the maitrī samādhi. With a mind of compassion pitying the suffering of sentient beings, he can destroy numerous afflictions, extending broadly to boundless sentient beings. At that time, he attains the karuṇā samādhi. Able to destroy displeasure, he causes boundless sentient beings to all attain joy and delight. At that time, he attains the muditā samādhi. Able to destroy suffering and pleasure, he directly contemplates boundless sentient beings in the ten directions; at that time, he attains the upekṣā samādhi. The second dhyāna is also like this; the third and fourth dhyānas exclude joy.
