The true mark of the body is like this! Why, in regard to this, does one give rise to viparyāsa and crave and cling to this body? Carefully reflecting and contemplating: pleasant sensation is bound up with the body; because one craves pleasant sensation, one is attached to this body. One should contemplate that pleasant sensation is truly unobtainable. How is it not obtained? One derives pleasure due to clothing and food, but when pleasure exceeds [its measure], suffering arises, so it is not true pleasure. Just as in the suffering of being afflicted by a sore, one applies medicine to treat it, and the cessation of pain is considered pleasure; because of a great suffering, one calls a small suffering pleasure, but it is not true pleasure. Furthermore, one takes old suffering as suffering and new suffering as pleasure. Just as when carrying a heavy load and shifting it to the other shoulder, one takes the new weight as pleasure, but it is not true or lasting pleasure. Just as the nature of fire is hot, without a moment of coldness: if it were true pleasure, there should be no displeasure.
