Among dharmas, shallow entry of wisdom is called an arhat; middling entry is called a pratyekabuddha; deep entry is called a Buddha. It is like seeing a tree from afar and being unable to distinguish the branches; slightly closer, one can distinguish the branches, but cannot distinguish the flowers and leaves; arriving under the tree, one can distinguish and know all the branches, leaves, flowers, and fruits. A śrāvaka can know that all conditioned formations are impermanent, that all dharmas have no master, and that only nirvāṇa is good and secure. A śrāvaka can contemplate in this way, but cannot distinguish with deep entry and deep knowledge; a pratyekabuddha can distinguish a little, but also cannot deeply enter and deeply know; a Buddha knows dharmas with exhaustive clarity, deeply entering and deeply knowing them.
