Answer: 'The practitioner reflects: "Having left the household and departed from the mundane, I should practice friendliness." Furthermore, he contemplates: "Eating the offerings given in faith by others, I ought to bring them benefit." As the Buddha said: "Practicing friendliness even for a moment is following the Buddha's teaching; this is entering the path, not receiving offerings in vain." Furthermore, while the body wears dyed robes, the mind should remain undyed; the power of the friendliness samādhi can keep it undyed. Furthermore: "My mind practices friendliness; in a world that destroys the Dharma, I am one who possesses the Dharma; amid a multitude of non-Dharma, I am one who possesses the Dharma, free of distress in accordance with the Dharma, due to the power of the friendliness samādhi." The bodhisattva travels the path, heading toward the gateway of amṛta; amid various kinds of burning affliction, friendliness is cool, refreshing joy. As the Buddha said: "When a person is exceedingly hot, entering a clear, cool pool is joy." Furthermore, donning the armor of great friendliness wards off the arrows of defilements; friendliness is a Dharma medicine that neutralizes the poison of enmity and grudges; when defilements burn the mind, friendliness can extinguish them; friendliness is a Dharma ladder to ascend the terrace of liberation; friendliness is a Dharma boat to cross the ocean of saṃsāra; for one poor in the wealth of wholesome dharmas, friendliness is the supreme jewel; for traveling toward nirvāṇa, friendliness is provisions for the road; friendliness is swift steeds to carry one into nirvāṇa; friendliness is a valiant general to cross beyond the three bad destinies. For one who can practice friendliness, all evils are quelled and subdued, and all the devas and wholesome spirits constantly follow and protect him.'
