"If a person directs evil [toward one], they will turn back and receive their own calamity. There are five kinds of evil speech: untruthful speech, non-factual speech, unprofitable speech, unloving speech, and non-gentle speech. These five kinds of evil speech cannot shake [one who abides in loving-kindness], and no poison or harm can injure them, just as a small fire cannot heat the great ocean. (Below this should appear King Udayana holding five hundred released arrows.) As told in the avadāna of King Udayana in the *Vīra-sūtra*, he had two consorts: one was named Anupamā, and the second was named Śyāmāvatī. Anupamā slandered Śyāmāvatī. Śyāmāvatī had five hundred upright persons; the king, taking five hundred arrows, wished to shoot and kill them one by one. Śyāmāvatī told all the upright persons: 'Stand behind me.' At that time Śyāmāvatī entered maitrī samādhi. The king drew his bow and shot at her, but the arrow fell at her feet. The second arrow turned back to the king's feet. The king was greatly terrified and wished to release another arrow. Śyāmāvatī spoke to the king, saying: 'Stop, stop! It is out of the propriety between husband and wife that I speak to you: if you release this arrow, it will pierce straight through your heart.' The king was then filled with fear; he cast down the bow, gave up shooting, and asked: 'What magical art do you possess?' She answered: 'I have no other art. It is because I am a disciple of the Buddha and have entered maitrī samādhi!'"
