If among the three poisons ignorance is especially predominant in one who practices the bodhisattva path, they should contemplate the twelve links so as to destroy the two kinds of ignorance: destroying internal ignorance regarding the body, and destroying external ignorance regarding sentient beings. They reflect and think: 'I and all sentient beings are together in hardship and distress: constantly being born, constantly aging, constantly falling ill, constantly dying, constantly perishing, constantly emerging. Sentient beings are pitiful, not knowing the path of escape; from what can they attain liberation?' With one mind they contemplate: birth, aging, illness, and death arise from causes and conditions. They should then further contemplate: from what causes and conditions do they arise? With one mind they contemplate: birth is conditioned by becoming, becoming is conditioned by grasping, grasping is conditioned by craving, craving is conditioned by feeling, feeling is conditioned by contact, contact is conditioned by the six sense bases, the six sense bases are conditioned by name-and-form, name-and-form is conditioned by consciousness, consciousness is conditioned by formations, and formations are conditioned by ignorance. Thus they further contemplate: from the cessation of what causes and conditions will birth, aging, and death cease? With one mind they contemplate: because birth ceases, aging and death cease; because becoming ceases, birth ceases; because grasping ceases, becoming ceases; because craving ceases, grasping ceases; because feeling ceases, craving ceases; because contact ceases, feeling ceases; because the six sense bases cease, contact ceases; because name-and-form ceases, the six sense bases cease; because consciousness ceases, name-and-form ceases; because formations cease, consciousness ceases; because ignorance ceases, formations cease.
