[The Buddha] told Śāriputra: "If any of the seven assemblies breaches a light precept and passes two nights without repenting, even if this person practices dhyāna-concentration in this life, he will never attain the Path. If one breaches a heavy precept, one will fall into the great hells; emerging from the hells, one will receive an animal body. Having completed this full cycle for a full three kalpas, only then will one become a human being. Even if one attains a human body, one will be poor and afflicted with leprosy for seventy-seven lives, not seeing a Buddha, not hearing the Dharma, and lacking the sensory faculties. Therefore, if a wise person breaches a Buddha's precept, regarding a duṣkṛta he should give rise to terror as if struck by a blade, and harbor deep shame and remorse. How much more so for a heavy precept! If one can take this medicine of keeping the precepts, know that this person is a foremost hero of shame, remorse, and patience, whom none can surpass."
