The Buddha said to Ānanda: "After the Buddha's parinirvāṇa, if disciples of the four assemblies wish to sit in meditation, they should first sit upright in silence for seven days, and then cultivate the mind through counting the breath for seven days. Furthermore, they should take these sickness-dispelling medicines and the like, dispel sounds and remove numbness, steady the mind and guard intention, cultivate the mind and cultivate the body, and harmonize the elements so as not to miss the proper time. Wholeheartedly and single-mindedly, they must not violate minor precepts or proper deportment; regarding the precepts they uphold, they should protect them as they would their eyes, just as a gravely sick person follows the instructions of a skilled physician. The practitioner should do likewise, following and repeatedly increasing them without letting them decline or be lost, as if extinguishing a fire on one's head, complying with the words of the worthy and holy. This is called curing sickness by taking medicine that warms the body."
