The Buddha addressed his father the king: "What is called contemplating the Tathāgata's crown? The Tathāgata's cranial bone is spherical, like a closed scroll; its color is pure white. If thin skin is seen, it appears red; or if thick skin is seen, it appears diamond-colored. The hairline is golden, and the brain is the color of crystal. It has fourteen veins completely endowed with manifold designs, and also fourteen lights, which lights are as distinct and clear as the veins. Within the brain veins, various lights arise swirling and surge upward against the skull, emerging from the skull up to the hairline; there are fourteen colors surrounding the mass of hair, and beneath the hair the golden color also produces manifold lights, which enter into the fourteen colors. This is called the cranial-brain uṣṇīṣa of the Tathāgata born in the royal palace. Only when the five great Brahma marks upon his crown arose, Māyā and the Buddha's maternal aunt both could not see them at all. Those five Brahma marks disclosed radiance reaching up to the Brahma realm, and further passing beyond the immeasurable worlds of the upper direction, transforming into palaces and platforms—the realm of the Buddhas, which Bodhisattvas of the Ten Stages cannot see.
