“How does one contemplate the mark of the Tathāgata’s eyelashes? The Tathāgata’s eyelashes grow with five hundred hairs each on the top and bottom, pliable and lovely like the filaments of an udumbara flower. From their tips flows forth a ray of light, colored like crystal (sphaṭika), which enters into the preceding marks. In the light and color it circles the head once, emerges from the occipital bone, surrounds the previous light, and purely gives rise to wondrous blue lotuses (utpala). Upon the lotus terrace is a blue parasol, held by a Brahmā king. When this mark appears, the Buddha’s eyes are blue and white: the white surpasses white jewels by hundreds of thousands of ten millions of times; the blue surpasses blue lotuses and dark-blue vaiḍūrya by hundreds of thousands of ten millions of times. The upper and lower lids blink together like the eyes of an ox-king. From the inner and outer canthi of the two eyes whirl forth two rays of light, like blue lotuses, extremely subtle. Circling the hair once, they emerge from the occipital bone, illuminating and adorning the flowers, causing the flowers to bloom, and their light becomes even more distinct. Such supreme marks of immeasurable merit are called the Tathāgata’s eyes.”
