The Buddha told his father, the king: “Therefore, the wise, in order to eliminate blindness and darkness, should contemplate the Buddha’s eyes. The Buddha possesses five eyes; in this contemplation practice, the fleshly eye is explained first. When its clear and pure light appears, the mind contemplating the eye becomes sharp; the realms that arise alongside it cannot be fully described. If one attentively contemplates the Buddha’s eyes for a short time, or contemplates the eyes of an image, through five lifetimes in future worlds one’s eyes will always be clear and pure, the visual organ free from disease, and the sins of seven kalpas of birth and death will be eliminated.” The Buddha told Ānanda to instruct the fourfold assembly: “Diligently contemplate the Buddha’s eyes, taking care not to neglect or abandon it. Those who contemplate the Buddha’s eyes will surely attain immeasurable, wondrous merit. If one can catch even a momentary glimpse of the hairline, the broad forehead, the hair’s spiral curls, the eye sockets, the eyebrows, the eyelashes, the eye-lines, and the light of such various marks, the sins of sixty kalpas of birth and death will be eliminated. In their future rebirths they will certainly see Maitreya, protected by the majestic light of the thousand Buddhas of the Auspicious Kalpa (Bhadrakalpa), their minds will be like lotuses without attachment, and they will never fall into the three wretched realms or the eight conditions of lack of leisure. If, while sitting, one cannot visualize them, one should enter a stūpa to contemplate. When entering a stūpa to contemplate, one should also form these visualizations of the lights, reverently joining palms and kneeling to attentively contemplate for one to three days with an unconfused mind. After life ends, they will be born in Tuṣita Heaven, seeing Maitreya Bodhisattva’s stately and sublime form-body face-to-face, receiving responsive transformation and guidance; and having seen him, body and mind will rejoice, and they will enter into the stage of the true Dharma.” The Buddha told his father, the king: “Contemplating in this way is called correct contemplation; contemplating otherwise is called incorrect contemplation.”
