"How does one contemplate the Tathāgata's mark of the broad and long tongue? The Tathāgata's tongue was obtained as a karmic reward from the ten pāramitās and the ten virtuous deeds. Under the base of his tongue and on both sides of the tongue, there are two precious gems that pour forth sweet dew (amṛta) dripping onto the base of the tongue. Heavenly beings, mortals, and bodhisattvas of the ten grounds have neither this mark of the tongue nor this taste. On the tongue are five patterns like the markings of a jewelled seal. This supreme taste enters the seal patterns, flowing up and down into lapis lazuli tubes. When the Buddhas smile, they move the base of their tongues. Due to the power of this taste, the tongue emits five rays of light, distinct in five colours, circling the Buddha seven times and then re-entering through his crown. When the Buddha extends his tongue, it is like a lotus petal, reaching up to the hairline and completely covering the Buddha's face. Under the tongue, there are also veins of various variegated colours. This supreme taste flows into the veins, and due to the power of that taste, transforms into numerous beams of light possessing fourteen colours.
