3.40

五百釋子詣阿難所，敬禮阿難白言：「尊者！我之與汝俱生釋家，汝獨聰明總持佛語，猶如瀉水置於異器，我宿罪故不見佛身，何況聞法？」說是語已，對阿難哭。

The five hundred Śākya sons went to Ānanda's place, paid homage to Ānanda, and said: "Venerable One! You and we were all born into the Śākya clan. You alone are intelligent and retain the Buddha's words, like pouring water into a different vessel. Due to our past sins, we cannot even see the Buddha's body, how much less hear the Dharma?" Having spoken these words, they wept before Ānanda.
