3.53

時諸比丘聞佛此語，各自悔責，偏袒右肩合掌向佛，而作是言：「我於前世無量劫時，邪見疑師、虛受信施，此因緣故墮地獄中，今雖得出，於無量世不見諸佛但聞其名，今見世尊身赤土色正長五尺。」

At that time, hearing these words of the Buddha, the monks each reproached themselves, bared their right shoulders, joined their palms toward the Buddha, and spoke these words: "In past lives countless kalpas ago, we held wrong views, doubted our teacher, and received the alms of the faithful in vain. Due to these causes and conditions, we fell into the hells. Although we have now emerged, for immeasurable lifetimes we did not see the Buddhas but merely heard their names. Now we see the Bhagavat's body as the color of red earth, exactly five feet in height."
