“What is called contemplating the mark of the Tathāgata’s nose? The Tathāgata’s nose is high, long, and straight, situated in the center of the face; the tip of the Tathāgata’s nose is like the beak of a falcon king. From the nostrils light flows, pouring upward and downward. The upward light ascends into the eyes, eyebrows, the mark of the white hair-tuft, and the hairline, directly entering the bone of the crown uṣṇīṣa like a golden banner, emerging from the occipital bone to transform into various flowers. Atop the flowers there are celestial musicians (gandharvas) holding musical instruments in their hands, everywhere entering among all the transformation Buddhas to serve as an escort, circling the light ten times. The downward light descends directly into the Buddha’s moustache, surrounding the hairs of the moustache, causing flowers to blossom at their roots like grains of panic grass, flowing into the lips and palate, and between the teeth, illuminating and adorning the throat, descending to the Buddha’s chest to form clouds of light, pure within and without, free from all dust and obscuration, like a vaiḍūrya vessel forming golden flames of light. This is called the mark of the Tathāgata’s truly pure nose.”
