The Buddha said to Ānanda: "What is called the Pointed Stone Hell? As for the Pointed Stone Hell: there are twenty-five stone mountains; each stone mountain has eight ice pools; and each ice pool has five poisonous dragons. In the world there are foolish sentient beings—monks, nuns, male novices, female novices, śikṣamāṇās, upāsakas, upāsikās, and the ninety-five kinds of brahmacārins—who proclaim what is Dharma to be non-Dharma, and what is non-Dharma to be Dharma, or who violate minor precepts and for a long time do not repent, their minds lacking shame and remorse, just like monkeys. When such a person's retribution for their sins arrives and their life is about to end, the breath beneath their heart becomes full, their belly swells like a drum, food and drink choke them so that they vomit, and liquids cannot go down. They immediately form this thought: 'If only I could get a pointed stone to block my throat, would that not be pleasant!' While they are having this thought, the hell-warden rākṣasas transform into a good physician who magically takes a pointed stone, turns it into a large medicine pellet, puts it in their mouth, and tells them: 'Close your mouth.' Their heart gives rise to joy. Their breath ceases, their life ends, and they are born amidst the stone mountains, where countless pointed stones enter through their backs and exit through their chests. The wardens furthermore pry open their mouths with iron forks and shove stones inside. In one day and one night, they die sixty billion times and are reborn sixty billion times; this is the retribution in that rebirth. Dying from here, they fall into the Black Rope Hell. As for the Black Rope Hell: there are eight hundred iron chains and eight hundred iron mountains; great iron banners are erected, and the chains are fastened at both ends. The hell-warden rākṣasas drive and press the sinners, forcing them to carry the iron mountains and run upon the iron ropes. Unable to bear it, they fall to the ground into cauldrons of boiling water. The rākṣasas drive them up; driven by acute thirst, they drink molten iron and swallow stones as they run. In one day and one night, they undergo this suffering a full hundred thousand times. When their retribution is complete, they are born into the world as servants; meeting a kalyāṇamitra who expounds the true Dharma to them, they are like fine white cotton cloth that easily takes dye and receives color: they attain the state of an arhat, endowed with the three knowledges, the six supernatural powers, and complete with the eight liberations."
