佛告阿難：「云何名阿鼻地獄？阿言無，鼻言遮；阿言無，鼻言救；阿言無間，鼻言無動；阿言極熱，鼻言極惱；阿言不閑，鼻言不住，不閑不住名阿鼻地獄；阿言大火，鼻言猛熱，猛火入心名阿鼻地獄。」

The Buddha told Ānanda: "Why is it called the Avīci hell? 'A' means without, and 'vīci' means obstruction. 'A' means without, and 'vīci' means rescue. 'A' means interval-less, and 'vīci' means motionless. 'A' means extreme heat, and 'vīci' means extreme anguish. 'A' means relentless, and 'vīci' means ceaseless; relentless and ceaseless is why it is called the Avīci hell. 'A' means great fire, and 'vīci' means intense heat; fierce fire entering the heart is why it is called the Avīci hell."
