"Furthermore, royal father! It is like the eraṇḍa growing together with sandalwood on Mount Malaya. When gośīrṣa-candana grows within a thicket of eraṇḍa, before it has grown large and while it is still underground, its sprouts, stems, branches, and leaves are like the bamboo shoots of Jambudvīpa. People do not know this, and say: 'In this mountain there is purely eraṇḍa; there is no sandalwood.' Now the foul odor of eraṇḍa stinks like a swollen corpse, scenting forty yojanas around; its flowers are red and very delightful, but if anyone eats them, they go mad and die. Although the gośīrṣa-candana grows in this forest, because it has not yet matured, it cannot emit fragrance. When the moon is full in mid-autumn, it suddenly emerges from the earth and becomes a sandalwood tree. Everyone smells the supreme, wonderful fragrance of the gośīrṣa-candana, and the foul, noxious stench of the eraṇḍa is forever gone."
