“Owing to the light of the white ūrṇā, the halo behind his neck first arose. When he was born in the royal palace, this light was like the sun, not clearly seen; the halo of one fathom will be explained separately. At that time, the eight classes of beings, beholding the light of the white ūrṇā, saw different things: some saw the white hair like the Buddhas; some saw the white ūrṇā like the bodhisattvas; some saw the white hair like their own parents. All venerated matters of the world were seen clearly at the tip of the hair, and upon seeing them they rejoiced. Some brought forth the supreme bodhicitta; some brought forth the minds of śrāvakas or pratyekabuddhas; and the ghosts who saw the white hair naturally developed minds of compassion, free of any malice.”
