The Buddha said to his father, the king: “The Tathāgata possesses immeasurable marks and secondary characteristics; within each mark, there are eighty-four thousand minor marks and secondary characteristics. Yet such marks and secondary characteristics do not equal even a small fraction of the merit of the white hair-tuft (ūrṇā). Therefore, today, for the sake of evil sentient beings of future eras, I expound the contemplative practice of dispelling evil through the great wisdom-light of the mark of the white hair-tuft. If there are people of extreme, grievous evil with wrong views who, hearing this contemplation method with its fully complete features, were to give rise to thoughts of anger and hatred, that is impossible. Even if they were to produce anger, the light of the mark of the white hair-tuft would still shelter and protect them. Merely hearing these words eliminates the sins of three kalpas, and in their next life they will be born in the presence of the Buddhas. Such hundreds, thousands, and billions of kinds of subtle, wondrous realms of contemplating the various lights cannot be fully described; when contemplating the white hair-tuft, they will naturally arise. Contemplating in this way is called correct contemplation; contemplating otherwise is called incorrect contemplation.”
