The Buddha told his father, the king: “How does one contemplate the Buddha’s ears? The Buddha’s ears hang down universally, and the earlobes spirally produce seven hairs, the rims, and various marks. When he was born in the royal palace and his ears were first pierced, both ear-holes produced flowers inside and outside. From within these lotuses and the seven hairs on the ears, rays of light flow forth in five hundred branches; each branch has five hundred colors, and each color produces five hundred transformation Buddhas; each Buddha has five bodhisattvas and five bhikṣus as attendants, circling the light clockwise five times, equal above and below, shining upon the Buddha’s ears. The Buddha’s ears are lovely, like precious lotuses suspended in the sunlight. When the Buddha was in the world, the entire great assembly saw this mark. This is called the color, marks, and light of the Buddha’s ears.”
