The Buddha told Ānanda: “Uphold the Buddha's words and do not let them be forgotten. Tell the disciples that one who rectifies their body and mind, sits upright in correct concentration, and contemplates the broad and long tongue is no different from when I am in the world. If there are sentient beings who hear this discourse and do not feel alarm, doubt, or give rise to slander, who do not vex those who practice mindfulness of the Buddha, but encourage them and offer them worship, reverence, honor, and praise—though such people may not themselves practice mindfulness of the Buddha, by virtue of their good intention they will eliminate the extremely grave evil karma of a hundred kalpas. In their future rebirths they will encounter Maitreya, and up to Rucika Buddha; in the presence of a thousand Buddhas they will hear the Dharma and receive transformation, constantly attaining this buddhānusmṛti-samādhi.”
