At that time, hearing these words of the Buddha, the four assemblies wept and shed tears like rain, joined their palms, and said to the Buddha: "We now cannot see the wondrous form." The five hundred Śākya sons tore out their hair, threw their bodies to the ground, with blood running from their noses, [crying]: "The Buddha was born into our house. When the Buddha was first born, everyone saw him as pure golden yellow. Yet we alone constantly see the Buddha's body as like a person made of charcoal, or like emaciated brāhmaṇas. What transgressions and faults did we commit in past lifetimes? We pray only that the Sun of the Buddha will explain it for us!" Having spoken these words, they tore out their hair, wailing as before and writhing, throwing themselves to the ground.
