"In the realm of hungry ghosts, they meet kalyāṇamitras, the great bodhisattvas, who rebuke them, saying: 'In your former bodies throughout measureless lifetimes, you committed baseless offenses, slandered [the Dharma], and lacked faith, falling into the Avīci hell and receiving various sufferings that cannot be fully spoken of. You should now bring forth a compassionate mind.' When the hungry ghosts hear these words, they recite: 'Namo Buddhāya!' Relying on the power of the Buddha's grace, they immediately pass away and are born in the realm of the Four Heavenly Kings. Having been born in that heaven, they repent their faults, rebuke themselves, and arouse bodhicitta. The light of the Buddhas' minds does not abandon them; it gathers them in with compassionate pity for them, just as for Rāhula, teaching them to avoid the hells just as one protects one's own eyes."
