5.17

"At that time, formless voices in the air say: 'Here is darkness; do you wish to go?' Hearing the voice, the sinner immediately forms the desire to go there. When their breath ceases and their life ends, they sit upon the iron bed, plunging down like a soaring king of geese into the dark place. Having entered within, knife-wheels above and below chop and mince their bodies. There are great iron crows with long and sharp beaks and talons that fly down from the mountains to strike and peck the sinners. In acute agony, they run swiftly seeking light but cannot find it, while caltrops beneath their feet pierce their bones through to the marrow. In such panic and terror, they pass five hundred million myriad years, also reckoned by the days and months of the Four Heavenly Kings. Those people smash their heads against the black mountains, their brains spilling out and their eyes popping forth; the rākṣasa hell-wardens fork them back with iron pitchforks and set them into their eye sockets. When their punishment is ended, they emerge to become impoverished people with squinting, cross-eyed, or blind eyes that see nothing, or they are driven away by people on account of leprosy. Such retributions for sin continue for five hundred lifetimes; after this has passed, they meet a kalyāṇamitra and arouse bodhicitta."
