The Buddha said to Ānanda: "What is called the Eighteen Drinking-Copper Hells? As for the Drinking-Copper Hells: there are one thousand two hundred kinds of variegated copper carts, and upon each copper cart are six thousand copper pellets. There are sentient beings who are stingy, greedy, jealous, and envious, holding wrong views and speaking evil words, who do not give to their parents, wives, children, relatives, or anyone else, their minds giving rise to stinginess and jealousy; seeing others gain benefit is like an arrow piercing their hearts. When such a sinner is about to die, they are afflicted with many illnesses and emaciated, speaking deliriously in confusion, saying with their own mouth: 'I want to have fruit to eat.' While they are speaking these words, the hell-warden rākṣasas transform their own copper carts, filling the carts with fruit, and come to the sinner's place. When the sinner receives it, joy arises in their heart, and they immediately form this thought: 'Having obtained these delicious fruits, I will eat them insatiably; this suits my wish exceedingly well.' Leaping with joy, their breath ceases and their life ends. Before long, they are born upon a copper cart, and shortly thereafter go on to be born amidst copper mountains. The copper carts crush their necks; the hell-warden rākṣasas use tongs to pry open their mouths and force them to drink molten copper. Having drunk the molten copper, they faint and collapse to the ground, crying out: 'Hungry! Hungry!' Immediately, the wardens tear their mouths open and place copper and iron pellets into their mouths; swallowing eighteen pellets, fire blazes at every joint. Running wildly east and west for the span of a day, only then do they die. The wardens cry out: 'In your former life, you flattered, held wrong views, and were stingy, greedy, jealous, and envious; by this cause and condition you receive the retribution of iron pellets. Or you once left the household life, violated minor precepts, failed to repent for a long time, and consumed in vain the offerings of the faithful; by this cause and condition you eat these iron pellets.' The sinner, for billions of years in retribution, knows neither water nor grain. When the suffering of their retribution is complete, they are reborn among humans; for five hundred lifetimes they stammer and stutter, unable to articulate clearly. Because of past habituation, after eating they chew on charcoal and eat clumps of dirt. After this has passed, they meet a kalyāṇamitra and give rise to the bodhicitta."
