The Buddha said to the great assembly: "Now, as for the benevolent mind, one should form a visualization, taking first one's relatives as the object. When fixing one's mindfulness, one thinks of one's own parents undergoing various suffering and distress, and of those who are unfilial; one thinks of one's own wife, children, and loved sentient beings undergoing various suffering and distress; and seeing sentient beings who have leprosy and ulcerous sores, having seen them, one thinks: 'How shall I save them?' When one visualization is accomplished, one should make a second visualization; when the second visualization is accomplished, one should make a third visualization; when the third visualization is accomplished, one fills one room with the visualization; when the visualization of one room is accomplished, one fills a monastery; when that of one monastery is accomplished, one fills a yojana; when that of one yojana is accomplished, one fills one Jambudvīpa; when that of Jambudvīpa is accomplished, one fills Pūrvavideha; when that of Pūrvavideha is accomplished, one fills the three continents; thus expanding gradually, it fills the realms of the ten directions.
