"Then the Bhagavat extended his golden arms and spread his webbed palms; from between his webbed fingers rained down great jeweled flowers. The great assembly all saw them transform into transformation Buddhas, while only the nāgas saw them as garuḍa birds wishing to seize and devour the nāgas. Terrified of the garuḍas, the nāgas fled into the Buddha's shadow, paid homage to the Buddha, and knocked their heads begging for rescue. When the Buddha reached the front of the canopy, he instructed Ānanda: 'Spread the niṣīdāna.' Ānanda then entered the canopy, first raising his right hand to take the niṣīdāna from his left shoulder. That niṣīdāna immediately transformed into fifty billion golden terraces adorned with the seven treasures; when he went to spread it, it immediately transformed into fifty billion lotus blossoms adorned with the seven treasures. When he adjusted the four corners, from each corner sprang fifty billion lotus blossoms of the seven treasures, row upon row filling the inside of the canopy.
