“At that time, the Bhagavat, accompanied only by Ānanda, carried his niṣīdana and held a water pitcher in his hand, the Bhagavat in front and Ānanda behind. From the Buddha’s alms bowl issued six lotuses, each lotus emitting golden light that illuminated the kingdom of Śrāvastī and turned it golden. Within the water of the pitcher was a great golden banner, and the head of the golden banner had five hundred rays of light; each ray of light transformed into a thousand transformation Buddhas, each fully endowed with the thirty-two primary marks, who paced through empty space and flew to the debate grounds. King Prasenajit and the great multitude scattered flowers, burned incense, and paid homage to the Buddha; hundreds of thousands of heavenly instruments sounded on their own without being struck, chanting the Tathāgata’s immeasurable merits. King Prasenajit knelt upright with joined palms and entreatingly invited the Tathāgata to transform the courtesans. The Buddha sat upon a flower throne and briefly explained suffering, emptiness, impermanence, and the various pāramitās to the great multitude, but the women would not accept it.”
