“The Buddha instructed Ānanda: ‘Tell King Prasenajit and the monks to stroll about as they please.’ King Prasenajit said to the venerables: ‘The Tathāgata in his great compassion wishes to transform the courtesans; we should now all go far away.’ Having spoken thus, he backed away and withdrew, leaving only the one thousand two hundred and fifty monks standing in attendance behind the Buddha. The Buddha told Kauṇḍinya: ‘Lead your followers to engage in walking meditation in the grove.’ The five hundred monks, with the greatly wise Śāriputra as their leader, still joined their palms and attended upon the Buddha to his left and right. The Buddha told Śāriputra: ‘You too may go as you please and debate and discuss what is appropriate with the debate masters.’ The five hundred monks followed behind Śāriputra to the flower grove, where they further explained the Four Noble Truths for King Prasenajit. Only Ānanda remained. The Buddha told Ānanda: ‘Leave the sitting mat behind; you too should go.’ Having spoken these words, the Bhagavat then went alone to the place of the women.”
