The Buddha told Ānanda: "You have not yet fully understood in your mind the Buddha's Dharma. When I am in the world, taking refuge in me is called taking refuge in the Buddha, taking refuge in the Dharma, and taking refuge in the Saṅgha. After the Buddha's parinirvāṇa, in the defiled and evil world, if sentient beings wish to eliminate their faults and transgressions, wish to attain from srotāpanna up to arhat in this present life, wish to give rise to the mind of sambodhi, or wish to understand the twelve links of dependent origination, they should diligently practice the buddhānusmṛti-samādhi."
