1.23

佛謂舍利弗：「令說經者，有三因緣：一者、恐佛去後，人不信餘比丘語故；二者、勸弟子意令解，佛尚令比丘說經，何況餘人；三者、現舍利弗功德，恐餘比丘各自貢高，欲得說經故。」是故，佛使舍利弗說經。

The Buddha said to Śāriputra: "That I cause you to expound the sūtras is due to three nidānas: first, for fear that after the Buddha departs, people will not believe the words of the other bhikṣus; second, to encourage the disciples' minds and cause them to understand, [seeing that] the Buddha even has a bhikṣu expound the sūtras, how much more so other people; third, to display Śāriputra's virtues, for fear that other bhikṣus might become arrogant and wish to expound the sūtras." For these reasons, the Buddha caused Śāriputra to expound the sūtras.
