1.42

佛言：「昔有栴那比丘得病，佛使舍利弗往與分衛。舍利弗因問之：『汝眼寧有所識不？』栴那對言曰：『眼無所識，但見色，識生身生，病對至故有病，身亦不知死。設身死者，地水火風空皆當滅，但為意識移生耳。』

The Buddha said: "In the past, the monk Channa fell ill, and the Buddha sent Śāriputra to go and bring him piṇḍapāta. Śāriputra then asked him: 'Does your eye have any consciousness?' Channa replied, saying: 'The eye has no consciousness; it merely sees form. Consciousness arises and the body arises; when the retribution of illness arrives, therefore there is illness. The body also does not know death. If the body dies, earth, water, fire, wind, and space will all perish; it is merely that the mental consciousness migrates to rebirth.'"
