佛語比丘：「當念身無常。」有一比丘即報佛言：「我念非常，人在世間極可五十歲。」佛言：「莫說是語。」復有一比丘言：「可三十歲。」佛復言：「莫說是語。」復有一比丘言：「可十歲。」佛言：「莫說是語。」復有一比丘言：「可一歲。」佛復言：「莫說是語。」復有一比丘言：「可一月。」佛復言：「莫說是語。」復有一比丘言：「可一日。」佛復言：「莫說是語。」復有一比丘言：「可一時。」佛復言：「莫說是語。」復有一比丘言：「可呼吸間。」佛言：「是也。」佛言：「出息不還則屬後世，人命在呼吸之間耳。」

The Buddha said to the monks: 'You should be mindful of the impermanence of the body.' A monk then replied to the Buddha: 'I contemplate impermanence; a person in this world can last at most fifty years.' The Buddha said: 'Do not speak such words.' Another monk said: 'Perhaps thirty years.' The Buddha said again: 'Do not speak such words.' Another monk said: 'Perhaps ten years.' The Buddha said: 'Do not speak such words.' Another monk said: 'Perhaps one year.' The Buddha said again: 'Do not speak such words.' Another monk said: 'Perhaps one month.' The Buddha said again: 'Do not speak such words.' Another monk said: 'Perhaps one day.' The Buddha said again: 'Do not speak such words.' Another monk said: 'Perhaps one hour.' The Buddha said again: 'Do not speak such words.' Another monk said: 'Perhaps between an exhalation and an inhalation.' The Buddha said: 'That is correct.' The Buddha said: 'If an out-breath does not return, one already belongs to the next life; human life exists only between an exhalation and an inhalation.'
