The Buddha said: 'Not eating after midday brings five benefits: first, less lust; second, less sleepiness; third, attainment of single-mindedness; fourth, no flatulence; fifth, physical well-being and freedom from illness. For this reason, śramaṇas and practitioners of the Way, knowing these benefits, do not eat. Bathing and rinsing the mouth has three purposes: first, for fear of dirt under the nails; second, scratching an itch as desired; third, killing fleas and mosquitoes. It is also intended to purify the mind, free it from desire, and avoid defiling the scriptures. These merely eliminate external dirt; they cannot eliminate evil thoughts in the mind. For a practitioner, purifying the mind must be the primary foundation. The mind is the root of the Dharma: when the mind is upright, conduct is proper; when conduct is proper, it accords with the Way.'
