"The eight hundred million nidāna sūtras spoken by the Buddha all cure people's three afflictions: first, lust; second, ill-will; third, delusion. These three matters are divided into six; thus they correspond to the six defilements to cure the three afflictions. The reason the sūtras are so numerous is that, just as when a person takes medicine and the illness is not cured, he must take another medicine. The Buddha said: 'People's minds have many inclinations and shift swiftly; therefore the sūtras are many. They are cured according to their inclinations, wishing to cause them to understand quickly.'"
