The Buddha said: 'What foolish people do is inverted; it is not the Dharma of the Buddhas. Devadatta thought to himself: "I shall fly away; when people see me flying, they will all follow and serve me." When he tried to fly away, he could no longer fly. While Devadatta was unaware that he had lost his riddhipāda, a brāhmaṇa practicing the immeasurable mind came down from the first heaven and said to Śāriputra: "Devadatta has already lost his riddhipāda." The Buddha said to Śāriputra: 'Devadatta wished to summon you, but that only caused him to incur greater transgression.' The Buddha said to the deva: 'Before Devadatta had even attained riddhipāda, I knew he would lose it; how much more so up to the present?' The Buddha said: 'A person should not be greedy; Devadatta lost his riddhipāda merely because of greed.'
