The Buddha said: 'In the past, a śrāmaṇera was traveling with his teacher. Seeing gold on the ground, he picked it up silently. He said to his teacher: "Walk quickly, there is no one around here; it is terrifying." The teacher said: "It is only because of the gold that you are afraid." When he threw the gold away, he was no longer afraid. The disciple then bowed to his teacher and said: "It was because of my foolishness and ignorance; now that I have discarded it, I am no longer afraid." The Buddha told the disciples: 'If practitioners crave the Way as the śrāmaṇera craved gold, why should they worry about not attaining the Way!'
