The Buddha told the king: 'In the past, when that king fed the Buddha, you thought in your heart: "The Buddha is like a king, and the śramaṇas are like ministers." You planted this seed, and today you have naturally reaped its fruit. That other person said: "The Buddha is like an ox, and the disciples are like a cart." He planted the seed of being run over by a cart, and now in Mt. Tai he is run over by fiery carts, naturally reaping his fruit. This is not something your valor could have brought about! For doing good, blessings follow; for walking in evil, calamity pursues—just as an echo responds to a sound, good and evil follow like tones. It is not done by gods, dragons, ghosts, or spirits, nor is it done by ancestral spirits; that which creates it is the mind, completed through body and mouth!'
