"Kulaputra, if sentient beings cultivate dhyāna, they should first adopt the gateway of counting, knowing clearly within their minds the arising, abiding, and cessation of thoughts, as well as their demarcations and numbers. In this way, pervading all four postures, they are fully aware of every distinct number of thoughts. Gradually advancing, they will come to know even a single drop of rain in hundreds of thousands of worlds, just as if witnessing an object used before their eyes. Any realm that they have not heard of must ultimately not be accepted. These are called the initial upāyas of the three contemplations. If sentient beings fully cultivate all three, diligently practicing with vigor, this is called a Tathāgata appearing in the world. If in the latter age dull-rooted sentient beings whose minds wish to seek the Path fail to achieve it due to past karmic obstacles, they should diligently repent, constantly giving rise to hope. First cutting off hatred, love, jealousy, and deceitfulness, and seeking the supreme mind, they should study whichever of the three pure contemplations they choose. If this contemplation is not attained, they should practice another, never abandoning it in their hearts, gradually seeking realization."
