"Kulaputra, from beginningless time all sentient beings have falsely conceived and grasped at a self, a person, a sentient being, and a life-span, mistaking the four inversions for their real self-entity. From this, the two realms of hatred and love are produced. Upon the unreal entity, they double their grasping at the unreal; the two unreas rely on each other and produce the path of unreal karma. Because there is unreal karma, they falsely perceive transmigration; those who revile transmigration falsely perceive nirvāṇa. Because of this, they are unable to enter pure enlightenment. It is not that enlightenment resists or rejects those who can enter; it is that there are [notions of] 'those who can enter,' which is not entry into enlightenment. Therefore, stirring thoughts and stopping thoughts both end in confusion and bewilderment. Why is this? Because there is beginningless original avidyā serving as one's own master. Sentient beings are born without the eye of wisdom; their body, mind, and nature are all avidyā, just as a person does not sever their own life. Therefore, you should know that when someone loves me, I accord with them; when someone does not accord with me, hatred and resentment arise. Because hatred and love nourish avidyā, those who continually seek the Way never succeed.
