"How should one know that one's dharma is not liberated? Kulaputra, those sentient beings of the latter age who cultivate bodhi take their own slight realization to be self-purification, yet they have not been able to eliminate the root of the mark of self. If another person praises their doctrine, joy immediately arises and they wish to deliver them; but if someone slanders what they have attained, hatred immediately arises. Thus one knows that the mark of self is tenaciously grasped, lurking concealed in the storehouse consciousness, playing about in the faculties without ever ceasing. Kulaputra, because those cultivators of the Path do not eliminate the mark of self, they cannot enter pure enlightenment. Kulaputra, if one knows that the self is empty, there is no one who slanders 'me'; when there is a 'me' expounding the Dharma, it is because the self has not been severed. The same applies to [the marks of] a sentient being and a life-span.
