Thereupon the bodhisattva mahāsattva Vajragarbha rose from his seat in the great assembly, bowed his head at the Buddha's feet, circumambulated him three times to the right, knelt with hands clasped, and addressed the Buddha, saying: "O Bhagavat of Great Compassion! You have skillfully proclaimed for the assembly of all bodhisattvas the Tathāgata's gradual upāya of practice on the causal stage of the pure great dhāraṇī of perfect enlightenment, opening up and dispelling the ignorance of all sentient beings. The assembly of the Dharma here gathered, having received the Buddha's compassionate instruction, has seen the cataracts of illusion vanish into clarity, and their eyes of wisdom have become pure. Bhagavat, if sentient beings are originally buddhas, for what reason is there again all this avidyā? If all avidyā is originally possessed by sentient beings, by what cause and condition does the Tathāgata again say that they are originally buddhas? If the diverse beings of the ten directions originally accomplished the Buddha path and later gave rise to avidyā, at what time will all Tathāgatas again generate all kleśas? We only pray that, not withholding your unhindered great compassion, you will open the secret treasury for the bodhisattvas, and enable all sentient beings of the latter age, upon hearing such a sūtra teaching, the definitive Dharma gateway, to sever doubt and regret forever." Having spoken these words, he cast his five limbs to the ground, making this request three times, from beginning to end.
