"Kulaputra, having illumination and having enlightenment are both called hindrances. Therefore, the bodhisattva constantly stays aware without abiding; illumination and the illuminator are simultaneously quiescent. For example, if a person were to cut off his own head, once the head has been severed, there is no one able to cut it off; thus, with an obstructing mind one eliminates all obstructions of oneself, and once the obstructions are severed and eliminated, there is no one who eliminates obstructions. The teachings of the sūtras are like a finger pointing to the moon: if one sees the moon, one realizes that what pointed to it is ultimately not the moon. All the various spoken teachings of the Tathāgata expounded to bodhisattvas are also like this. This is called the accordance with the nature of enlightenment of bodhisattvas who have already entered the stages.
