Thereupon Tejovāśitā Bodhisattva rose from his seat in the great assembly, bowed his head to the Buddha's feet, circumambulated him three times to the right, knelt on both knees with his palms joined, and addressed the Buddha, saying: "O Bhagavat of great compassion! You have broadly analyzed for us such accordance with the nature of enlightenment, causing the luminous minds of the bodhisattvas to receive the Buddha's perfect voice and attain excellent benefits without relying on practice. Bhagavat, for example, just as a great city has four gates on the outside, and those who come from various directions do not take only one road, so too the adornment of Buddha-lands and the attainment of bodhi by all bodhisattvas do not rely on a single upāya. May the Bhagavat broadly proclaim for us all the stages of upāyas, and altogether how many kinds of practitioners there are, so that the bodhisattvas in this assembly and sentient beings of the latter age who seek the Mahāyāna may quickly attain awakening and disport in the Tathāgata's great ocean of quiescence." Having spoken these words, he cast his five limbs to the ground; in this manner he made three requests, ending and beginning again.
